When Can You Book a Driving Test?
Before booking your practical car driving test, you must have passed your driving theory test. GOV.UK confirms that you need to pass the theory test before you can book a car practical driving test.
You should also have a valid provisional driving licence and be receiving enough practical training to safely drive independently.
Although you may technically be eligible to book your practical test, that does not necessarily mean you are ready to take it.
Your instructor should help you assess your progress and identify whether you are consistently driving at the required standard.
What Do You Need Before Booking?
Before you start the booking process, make sure you have the following:
- Your provisional driving licence
- Your theory test pass
- Your driving instructor’s reference number, if you want them associated with your booking
- A suitable payment method
- An idea of when you are likely to be test-ready
It is important to speak to your instructor before selecting a date. Under the current 2026 rules, learners must book and manage their own car practical driving tests; an instructor cannot book the test on your behalf. You can, however, enter your instructor’s reference number during booking so they can be aware of the appointment.
How to Book a Driving Test in Warrington
The official way to book your practical driving test is through the GOV.UK driving test booking service.
The basic process is:
1. Pass Your Theory Test
You need to pass your theory test before booking your practical car test. If you have not completed it yet, make this your first priority.
2. Speak to Your Driving Instructor
Before choosing a date, discuss your progress with your instructor.
A good instructor can tell you which skills still need improvement, whether you are consistently driving safely and approximately when you may be ready.
3. Find the Appropriate Test Centre
When booking, select the Warrington test centre if that is where you intend to take your test.
Choosing a centre where you have received training can be beneficial because your lessons can include practice around the types of roads, junctions, roundabouts and traffic conditions you may encounter.
4. Select a Suitable Date and Time
Choose a date that gives you enough time to prepare.
Do not select a test simply because it is the earliest available appointment. Being underprepared can result in a failed test, additional lesson costs and the inconvenience of waiting for another appointment.
5. Complete Your Booking
Enter the required information, confirm that you are the learner taking the test and pay the applicable test fee through the official booking service.
Avoid unofficial websites or services claiming to find or manipulate test appointments. The DVSA introduced important changes in 2026, including restrictions on unofficial services searching the booking system.
Choosing the Right Test Date
One of the biggest mistakes learners make is booking a test too early.
Your test date should give you enough time to work on areas such as:
- Junctions
- Roundabouts
- Independent driving
- Parking manoeuvres
- Speed control
- Following road signs
- Lane discipline
- Hazard awareness
- Dual carriageway driving
- Moving off and stopping
- Emergency stops where appropriate
If your instructor regularly needs to intervene or give you significant prompts, you may need additional training before taking the test.
For learners who need focused preparation, Darz also offers Intensive Driving Courses designed to provide structured training for learners who already have driving experience and want concentrated preparation.
Should You Book Your Test Before You Are Ready?
It can be tempting to book a test as soon as possible because practical test appointments can be difficult to find.
However, you should balance availability with your actual ability.
Booking a test too far in advance can create unnecessary pressure. You may also have limited flexibility under the current rules.
As of 2026, car practical driving tests can only be changed twice. If you need to move your appointment, the new rules also restrict changes to the three nearest test centres.
For this reason, choose your appointment carefully and make sure the date is realistic.
Prepare for Your Warrington Driving Test
Good test preparation involves more than practising the same route repeatedly.
Your instructor should help you become comfortable driving in different situations so that you can respond safely even when something unexpected happens.
During your Driving Lessons, you can work on areas where you need the most improvement.
For example, if roundabouts are causing problems, additional practice can help you understand lane positioning, observations and timing. If parking is difficult, your instructor can spend more time practising manoeuvres until they become more natural.
Mock tests can also be extremely useful. They allow you to experience a test-style drive while receiving feedback about mistakes that could affect your result.
What If You Need to Change Your Test?
If you realise that you are not ready for your driving test, do not simply continue hoping that you will improve on the day.
Talk to your instructor as soon as possible.
Remember that the 2026 rules limit car driving test changes to two, so you should select your original test date carefully.
Always use the official GOV.UK service to manage your appointment.
